I was amused when I seen a collection of "Twerk Team" shirts and hats on my Wanelo App. I thought it was cute. Even when Miley dressed up like a unicorn and wopped for all that she was worth, I was with it. But damn. After the whole debauchery on MTV went down, a large dark cloud began to float over my head. Why?!! Miley Cyrus single-handily almost destroyed twerking. Now grannies were dropping it low and busting it wide open on youtube. I couldn't take it anymore. On the heels of Miley's performance Robin Thick dropped his video "Give it 2 U".
Straight for the sidelines of an HBCU homecoming. With some very strange references to drugs and alcohol. In addition American fashion designer Rick Owens has lit up the runway with a step show themed fashion show for Paris Fashion Week.
Step Shows, or stepping is a form of dance were the dancer creates a rhythmic beat with their feet and hands, originally an African dance that was brought over during the slave trade. Its is a hallmark in the black culture, especially black Greek culture (frats and sororities)
I was immediately taken back to my HBCU days, when all the students would like up in the middle of the night to watch a probate. Now, I will not take away the major accomplishment of showcasing real women with real bodies and real faces gracing a Parisian runway, especially brown faces. Kudos to you Mr. Owen. However a piece of me wants to roll my eyes. Hopefully, stepping and HBCU culture will not become some trend only to be thrown to the wayside once America is down with it.
