This ad is for Sony Hifi earbuds.
It is from 2008.
The agency may have been Deutsch, but Sony has switched from this agency to BBH New York.
Interestingly enough, the reviews on the site that I got this ad were mixed. Some people understood it, some did not. As for myself, I got the message clearly and found this to be a very simple and smart visual.
The sound from the Sony Earbuds are so clear and crisp, that the music gets instead of your head. I also love that they did not show the product, because ultimately the earbuds are about music quality and music experience, not the item itself.
Also by not showing the product our attaching it to a particular genre of music the way I think Dre Beats does, it covers a blanket of consumers. It appeals to all people no matter the gender, income, age, ect. The other thing that matters is that the consumer has a appreciation for music, so much so that they will invest in quality ear phones.
Also, by not showing the ad, and having such a clean lay out, I believe that it hints towards a high brow/mid brow, luxurious but affordable tone. In my very humble and unprofessional appeal, a clutter of logos and other visuals cheapens a product's appeal.
